Terminal tiles
A terminal tile is an agent's terminal on the stage. It is a real terminal, so you type straight into it. This page covers what Pond adds around it.
Find
Press Cmd-F in a focused tile. A find bar opens along its top edge with one field, a count such as "3 of 12", and a close button. Typing shows the newest match first, because the latest output is what you usually look for.
- Return or Down goes to the next match, and Shift-Return or Up to the previous one. Cmd-G and Shift-Cmd-G do the same.
- The search ignores case. It covers the screen and the scrollback.
- The count stops at "10000+".
- Esc closes the bar and gives the keyboard back to the terminal. Nothing you type in the bar reaches the agent.
Split into two panes
Cmd-D splits the focused tile into two panes side by side. Shift-Cmd-D stacks them. The new pane is a plain login shell in the tile's worktree. It uses your SHELL when that is a program with an absolute path, and /bin/zsh otherwise. It is never a second agent, and it does not get a blob.
- A tile has at most two panes. A second Cmd-D does nothing.
- Click a pane, or press Option-Cmd with an arrow key, to move the focus along the split. The pane without the focus is dimmed a little. Without a split, those keys are not taken.
- Drag the line between the panes to change their sizes; when you let go, typing goes on in the pane you were in. A click on the line without moving it puts the keyboard focus on it. Each pane keeps at least 20 columns (side by side) or 5 rows (stacked), and the split stays between 20 and 80 percent. A tile too small for both gets even halves.
- Press Option-Cmd-Backslash to put the keyboard focus on the line. It turns into a 2 pt accent line. The arrow keys along the split (left and right, or up and down when stacked) move it by 5 percent, within the same 20 to 80 percent. Escape or Return gives the focus back to the pane, and so does Option-Cmd with an arrow. VoiceOver reads the line as a splitter named "Pane divider" with its position in percent.
- Cmd-C, Cmd-V, Cmd-A and Cmd-F act on the pane that has the focus. The find bar sits on that pane and searches it.
- Keys typed in the shell never reach the agent.
Closing
- Cmd-W in the shell pane closes it and ends its shell.
- Cmd-W in the agent's pane closes the tile, as before. The shell keeps running and comes back when you reopen the tile.
- If the tile's agent ended while Pond was quit, its shell has no tile to come back to. At the next launch Pond stops that shell, only the one it started for the pane, and forgets the split.
- The close button in the tile's header always closes the tile.
- If you type
exitin the shell, its pane closes.
Pond remembers the split. It comes back after you reopen the tile and after a relaunch, because the shell lives in Pond's terminal helper, which keeps running when Pond quits. The layout is stored in panes.json in the Pond folder.
Drop files and screenshots
Drag files from Finder onto a tile, or copy them in Finder and press Cmd-V. Pond types their paths into the agent's input, quoted for the shell and separated by spaces. It never presses Return.
A picture without a file, such as a screenshot dropped or pasted from the clipboard, is saved first as .pond-drop/drop-<date>-<time>.png in the worktree, and its path is typed. That folder is private to you (only you can read it), has its own .gitignore that ignores everything in it, and Pond refuses images over 64 MB. A dropped image file keeps its own path.
A file whose name has a line break or another hidden character is left out, and the tile's footer says so.
